Pike Central had a great start to the game on the defensive end. We got some stops, boxed out and rebounded well, and got back into our offensive groove. Leighty came out with a easy bucket after the Chargers took control of the quarter by slowing down their offense and executing the play. Mills also scored a three-point bucket leaving the quarter with the Chargers up 5-2.
The second quarter was about the same. Some great defensive stops by Kabrick, J. Sallee, and Whitehead caused us some more scoring opportunities. Mills scored another three-point bucket and Meadows was able to get a bucket underneath the goal. The Chargers ended the half up 10-5.
The Chargers defense lightened a little as the South Spencer was able to score 5 in the third quarter. The Chargers kept the offensive end slower, though, and still were able to work it into our posts. We got another bucket by Leighty and Meadows got fouled a couple times, scoring 2 free-throws. J. Sallee also scored a bucket from the outside, giving the Chargers a 16-10 lead.
The final quarter proved to be a match from the charity stripe. The Chargers were able to connect on 3 of 4 free-throws with Mills making two and Whitehead making one. Leighty connected on another bucket in the paint. Pike Central lead the whole way and didn’t turn back. The Chargers ended the fourth quarter 21-14.
“We needed this win! The girls have fought hard every game, making improvements where needed, and it worked out for us tonight! This was the turn-around that we needed. We played great defense, holding them to only 14 points. I love how our offense is really turning around, and the girls are slowing it down, and working on letting the play work. It paid off with our posts getting more action tonight. It was a great win for the girls! They deserve it!” – Coach Smith
