Pike Central 8th Grade closes out their season with a 37 – 22 loss to Tecumseh in the South Gibson Invitational Tournament. With a David and Goliath meeting, Goliath was unfortunately victorious. The first quarter was quiet for Mills as she was guarded heavily scoring 17 in the last meeting between the teams. Anna Whitehead stepped up scoring two buckets, and Kelby Leighty was 1 of 2 from the free-throw line, ending the quarter with PC down 5 – 10.

The second quarter Pike Central had scoring from Brailey Mills including a steal ending in an easy lay-up, as well as a three-pointer. Kelby Leighty had another opportunity to score a bucket as well. Tecumseh’s height came into play as PC was clearly at a disadvantage. Post play from Tecumseh left Pike Central down 22 – 12 at half.

The third quarter was quiet on offense for both teams. Fouls started to plague Pike Central as Tecumseh went 5 of 8 from the charity stripe with a bucket. Kelby Leighty was Pike Central’s only scorer in the third quarter with one bucket. Pike Central was down 14 – 29 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter scoring came from Brailey Mills hitting 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, Ruby Sallee scored a bucket, and Kelby Leighty scored a goal. The quarter ended with Tecumseh winning 37 – 22.

“The girls did a great job, again, at the free-throw line hitting 5 of 7. The girls have always been shorter than the other teams and have fought through it. They all fight hard and give awesome effort. I thought they did a great job taking time on offense and took advantage of their speed when driving to the basket. I was happy to see our post-play get more action. The girls did a great job feeding Kelby tonight. Scoring was more balanced tonight with 4 of 6 girls putting points on the board. I look forward to watching these girls as they continue learning and growing together as a team in their high school career.” – Coach Smith
